Bathroom
Lighting—Dazzle The Space With Brilliance and Beauty!
The
bathroom may very well be one of the most difficult rooms in the home
to illuminate properly. Odd angles and the peculiar lighting
needs of the space make finding the right bathroom light fixtures more
than challenging. But, with a little homework and patience, you
can truly make the space dazzle while enhancing the overall look and
feel of the space.
Darkness
and shadows are some of the biggest problems with vanity
lighting. This is because far too often the space is illuminated
with a lonely ceiling fixture. In any space, especially the
bathroom, you need to spread the illumination between more than one
bath light because there are different types of interior lighting due
to varying needs. While a ceiling fixture is great for providing
overall or general illumination, a wall sconce or vanity light is also
necessary to add task lighting for hygiene needs and other
duties. But how much light do you really need?
A good
rule of thumb to remember is that the overall illumination for a room
should equal the square footage of the space multiplied by 1.5
Watts. A 12’X12’ bathroom will need approximately 220 Watts of
overall illumination. While you may be tempted to simply flood
the space with that much illumination from a ceiling fixture, this will
tend to create glare and a rather uncomfortable environment.
Instead, you want to derive approximately 50-60 percent of your
lighting from the ceiling fixture and the rest from wall sconces,
bathroom light bars, etc.
Bathrooms
can also be a great place for a small table lamp, if there is
sufficient counter space, a handy outlet location, and if the lamp is a
safe distance from water sources. Small lamps can add warmth and charm
to your existing bathroom decorating. Lamp shades should be designed to
stand up to the damp environment of a bathroom. Lamp shade colors and
materials can either be chosen to match your towels, shower curtain,
and rugs, or to bring an additional accent color into the room.
The actual
style and materials of the fixtures themselves will depend primarily
upon the overall décor of the room as well as the bath fixtures and
other details in the space. A traditional or rustic bath décor
will probably look best when illuminated with bathroom lights featuring
a finish of polished brass, Peruvian bronze, or perhaps even a Palladio
finish. More contemporary settings would probably be more
suitable to a brushed steel or even polished chrome finish.
Finally,
never forget that all light fixtures, whether for the bathroom or not,
need to complement the others in the space in style, materials, and
color scheme. By doing so, you will unify the various bathroom
lighting and create a more dazzling decorative effect.
Remember, the bathroom should be one of the most relaxing and inviting
rooms in the home so take your time when choosing the best lighting
options!
