Bathroom
Lighting—Make an Impression Without Saying a Word!
Of all the
elements in any décor, it is lighting that is the most important when
it comes to setting the overall look and feel of the space.
Commonly and in large part because bathrooms tend to be small or oddly
spaced rooms, there is either too much light and the space feels
uncomfortable or it is poorly lit by some lonely bathroom light fixture
and you need to feel your way to the toilet. It is vital to have
the right amount of light—and the right kinds of light—in your bathroom
décor in order to beautify the space while gracing it with a soothing
ambiance.
In the
bathroom or any space really, the key to proper illumination really
does involve spreading illumination between multiple light sources and
types. There are three basic types of illumination where lighting
fixtures are concerned:
1.
Ambient: the general illumination
2.
Task: provides illumination for completion of specific activities
3.
Accent: add depth to lighting design
Ambient
lighting should be the starting point in any lighting plan and this
type of illumination is typically supplied by an overhead fixture
centrally located in the room. Common
sources of ambient lighting include:
1.
Flush-mounted ceiling fixture
2.
Semi-flush ceiling fixture
3.
Chandelier
4.
Pendant
The
bathroom décor should also include include sources of task lighting
especially around the vanity. Wall sconces are great sources of
task, ambient, and potentially accent lighting and can be mounted on
either side of a mirror for a symmetrical and very decorative
look. The wall sconces can be left on and adjusted with a dimmer
switch and then used as accent lights when the ceiling fixture is left
off—providing a convenient night-light while still saving on energy
costs.
When you
balance the lighting properly and spread the illumination between
different types of bathroom light fixtures, the effect is
unmistakable. You should never have to shield your eyes or have
trouble seeing the surroundings. Plus, with multiple vanity light
fixtures, you can coordinate the style and materials to create a more
unified décor and a compelling decorative effect that will delight the
eyes and elevate the entire look and feel of your bath décor.
The total
illumination you will need for the bathroom will really depend on the
room dimensions and ceiling height. Typically in a room with an
8’ ceiling, the overally required will be roughly equal to the total
square footage multiplied by the constant 1.5 Watts. So, for a
bathroom that is 12X12, you will need roughly 220 Watts of total
illumination. The ceiling fixture should supply roughly 50-60% of
the overall illumination with other fixtures making up the distance.
Bathroom
light fixtures are critical to making the space feel warm and
inviting. After finding out how much illumination you need and
deciding how to spread the illumination, you next need to choose
materials and a style that complements the bath décor. When the
bathroom lights are complementary to both themselves and the
surrounding décor, the effect is positively breath taking!
